SATURDAY NIGHT IN SPAIN

My way of life in Spain, is very different from the UK. The same problems are here.  Alcohol, drugs, sex, claw hand, caused by the constant holding of a mobile phone…

But, the lifestyle is very different and teenagers have a ball.  Although kids are with you constantly and living in a small village can drive you insane; it does have one or two compensations. This is a typical Saturday night in my house.

My daughter is in front of the mirror wishing her spots would disappear and my son has poured the entire contents of a bottle of aftershave over himself. Eventually they appear in the kitchen, where their dad and me, have just started our second bottle of wine.

“Where are you eating”, I ask, “oh, in Jose’s bar, have you got any money mum”? they ask in unison. Just then number 3 child appears.” I want to come and eat too”.  “Oh, Daisy” says my eldest, “you know you’ll get tired and grumpy”, stay here with mum and dad.

Something suddenly clicks in my husband’s brain, “no take her, there’s loads of kids in the park”, (I go and look, he’s right) “we’ll put the key on the window, we’re going to watch TV upstairs, it’s much cosier in bed”. He says this with a desperate grin on his face. (He’s a lorry driver and only gets to be at home 24 hours!) Spanish recession- you must work until you drop, or lose your job.

The three of them troop out the door.

My daughter turned 14 in December, my son is 13 and my youngest, is 11.  It’s 10.15 at night.

Viva España!
